Being a globally renowned institution for research and education, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) recognizes the diverse perspectives and multiple innovation opportunities that digitalization presents. Driven by our institutional strategy, “TUM. The Entrepreneurial University”, we want to become a hub for exploring this transformation in all its dimensions – technologically, politically, socially, and ethically, and from a regulatory point of view.

The recent shift to virtual collaboration and communication platforms during the pandemic has highlighted the enormous potential of digitalization for enhancing administrative efficiency and resource management, capitalizing on the opportunities of new work, study, and research formats, and advancing internationalization. As TUM, we want to seize these opportunities for structural change and adapt our functionalities to the ever-evolving world. To grasp these opportunities efficiently, we developed this TUM Digitalization Strategy, which focuses on how Information Technology can contribute to our Vision and Mission in the coming years while adhering to our Values and Principles.

Along with our TUM Digitalization Strategy, every choice that will be made will respect the highest international standards and our spirit of excellence, aiming to become one of the leading global references. Entrepreneurial thinking will guide our responsible use of resources to achieve maximum results with minimum use of funds, labor, and energy. Decisions will be made based on an internal dialogue with all Schools involved and by opening up TUM’s overseas discussions with other universities and public and private entities. Each measure will be evaluated based on inclusiveness, sustainability, and transparency criteria.

The TUM Digitalization Strategy is provided as a living website that is directly linked to current achievements. It is not meant to be another printed document that is merely coming to life but rather a guideline for all coming projects that will adapt to new inventions over time.
